  • Runner approaches Gr. Council and says Klayhalya the Gr. Council
  • Chiefs enter with pipe
  • Fire lighting ceremony
  • Pipe lite
  • Prayer to the winds

  • David introduces the Ranger Reports
  • Ranger Reports
  • Hiawatha welcomed by David
  • He sits on big rock above
  • Bellamy lites his pitch fire

3 Mourners come and sit by fire

  • Hiawatha gives his speech
  • Hiawatha goes to the entrance and slings Mourning of our departure
  • Mourners respond with Fare thee well
  • Hiawatha sings again at the edge of the Oasis cabin
  • Mourners reply
  • David asks for volunteers

Mourners leave

  • David tells the story of the three mourners who have gone on their vigils.

Council closes with Wakonda dey do.

Even after all this time, I remember it like it was yesterday. I can still do the drum music. “Dum-Da-Da-Da-Da-Dum!Dum-Da-Da-Da-Da-Dum!” Before my brother and I went to camp, we used to practice Pat and Mike at home, so that we were ready for the competition at Indian Council. Many happy times associated with Indian Council

We used to practise Pat and Mike at home too Sean!!! One year I was a fire lighter with Allen Weeks. After watching all those years, actually lighting the fire for the ceremony was an incredible honour that I will never forget.
